"Mohmand Agency " by FATA Awareness Initiative

Mohmand Agency
Introduction
Mohmand or Moomand (مومند ) is an agency (tribal district) of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan, created in 1951. Its terrain is mostly hilly and the scanty rainfall makes it dry. Its border with Afghanistan's Kunar Province makes it of strategic importance to Pakistan and the region.
Ghalanai is the chief town of Mohmand and houses the headquarters of the Agency’s administration and the paramilitary Mohmand Rifles force. The main tribe of the agency is Mohmand (or Moomand), however, a large population of Safi and Utman Khel tribes also live in the agency. The Safi and Utman Khel are concentrated in the the north and east while Moomand are spread all over the agency.
Geography
Mohmand Agency has a total area of 2,297 Sq Km. To its west lies Kunar from which it is separated by a series of rugged Hindukush hills and intermittent mountain passes; Bedmanai Pass being the notable one. To the south of Mohmand lies another tribal district, Khyber Agency while Peshawar lies to its south-east. To the east are Malakand and Charsadda districts while to the north is Bajaur Agency
The major towns of Mohmand are Ghalanai, Gandhab (Mian Mandi), Yekka Ghund and Lakaro. Other notable towns of the agency include Danishkul, Khwezai, Ghanam Shah, Qandharo.
Mohmand is inhabited almost exclusively by Mohmand Pukhtoons alongwith a sizeable population of Safi and Utman Khel. The clans of Mohmand tribe inhabiting the agency are Halimzai, Tarakzai, Khawezai, Baezai, Dawezai, Utmanzai and Kukkozai. The Safi sections living in Mohmand are Massaud, Qandhari, Wader and Gurbaz while the Utman Khels are mostly of Boot Khel section.
The 1998 census conducted by the Govt. of Pakistan put the population of Mohmand at 0.334 million and population growth rate at 4.28 percent. By simple interpolation of the 1998 census data, the current population of Mohmand Agency (as of 2011) must be touching the 0.6 million figure.
